Responding to someone who may have experienced Sexual Misconduct

At the University of Houston-Clear Lake, ours is a community that cares. 如果你看到 someone in need, you should 帮助他们. 与 that said, because you are a member of this community, you may find yourself in the position of responding to a direct disclosure of 不正当的性行为 from another member. And if that happens, here is how you can 帮助他们.

If you believe the person (reporter) is about to tell you about an incident of sexual misconduct, explain your reporting duties before they make the disclosure. 如果 reporter wants to talk to someone WITHOUT any information being reported, refer them to the confidential resources listed in the resources section of this website. 同时, here is a sample script you could use:

"I need to tell you that if I become aware that 不正当的性行为 has occurred, I am required to inform University staff who are specially trained to respond, so that steps can be taken to ensure your safety and the safety of our community. 你的隐私 will be respected, but if you prefer to talk to someone who does not have an obligation 要报告,还有其他选择. On campus, you can talk to someone in our counseling center."

During the disclosure: Listen with empathy.

Listening is the single most important thing you can do. 没有人应该成为受害者 of violence, regardless of the circumstances. Avoid asking questions that imply fault, such as "How much 你喝酒了吗??或者“你为什么不报警??相反,说一些简单的话 and kind, like: "I'm sorry this happened to you.或者“谢谢你告诉我。."

During the disclosure: Provide Non-Judgmental Support and Respect Their Decisions.

这是最重要的 ways to provide support is to listen without judging or 指责. Remember no matter the circumstances, no one deserves to be subjected to 不正当的性行为. Allow the victim to talk about their experience. 这个人可以 not know what to call what happened; do not define the experience for them. 遵循 their lead; do not take control of the situation or try and do something to "fix" it. Having experienced 不正当的性行为 can cause the person to feel a loss of control; let the victim make their own decisions, and support their decisions. 一些常见的反应可能包括 shock, fear, embarrassment, guilt, anger, depression, and/or feeling overwhelmed. Remember, you are not an investigator; you are someone the victim trusts. Avoid telling the victim what they "should" or "must" do. 这是最重要的 things you can do is help the victim take back the power that they have lost. 试一试 phrases like: "What kind of help do you need?" or "When you are ready, there is help 可用."

如果re is immediate danger, contact the 大学警务处 (281-283-2222). Remember, it is always the victim’s choice whether or not to report 报警.

如果 reporter is a victim of 不正当的性行为, you should provide the victim with additional information for contacting on-and-off campus resources. 你可以开始 by making them aware of this website if they are not aware of it already.

At the earliest possible time (no later than 24 hours) after you receive information that a student has experienced 不正当的性行为, you must report it to the Title 第九协调员. You will need to report all relevant details about the incident(s) This includes the names of the reporter, the accused, and any witnesses, as well as any other relevant facts, including the date, time, and 事件的具体地点. Once you have reported to the Title 第九协调员, you do not need to take further action. Understand, however, that you may be contacted for follow-up information as the University proceeds to respond to the report.
